Sketching a moment in time…
Weddings, Events, special moments all captured through illustrations?…
Now this is a random idea but could be a wonderful little venture.
So, recently I was commissioned to create an illustration that would make an ideal gift for the customers soon to be wed Sister…
Straight away I thought “Please don’t be a couple portrait, this is not my forte, I don’t do couple portraits, jeez!” Anyway, it luckily wasn’t a portrait that the customer (Bex) was asking for…
Bex wanted to somehow capture the upcoming wedding day through a drawing. So between myself and Bex we hatched a plan to create a ‘one of a kind’ illustration for her sisters big day… An illustration of the wedding venue depicting the day of the wedding at ‘The Maynard’ Hotel in Derbyshire…
The Process…
Sketch - Pen - Colour - Print.
Bex gave me all the info I needed about what was happening on the day, from the croquet game to the Scottish relatives in kilts. Oh and the ‘bees and flowers’ theme, so, well… I couldn’t resist drawing it all from a ‘bees eye view’!
There’s even a bridesmaid dressed as a bee in there to add a little touch of ‘Where’s Wally?’ see if you can spot her?
It all started with a simple sketch…
I drafted up a quick sketch that showed what might be in the image. Bex then gave me some feedback with a few ideas of things to be added/swapped out and I got to work creating the final pen image.
The pen image itself made for a great illustration but the vibrant theme of the wedding and summer setting meant that this couldn’t go without colour.
Safe to say, i’m glad I added the colour, it really helped to pop the image.
In the end the illustration was printed on high quality A3 paper, framed and put on show on the wedding day next to the guest book for all to see…
Oh and yes the image was used for the thank you cards too!
Not just weddings?…
So there we have it, my first Wedding illustration.
It did get me thinking though...
There are weddings, events and all kinds of gatherings happening all the time, all over the globe.
Past, Present or Future…
So why not celebrate and immortalise them with more than a photograph?
What a gift that would be…
